Alta California Mexican residents declared independence from Spain in 1826, and much of California was granted by the governor of Mexico (and later California) to various individuals. Thousands of acres in the San Bernardino Valley area were awarded to the Lugo family which set up residence in the San Gabriel Mission estancia, built on what is now known as Barton Hill.
The Bermudas family established their farm at what is now Barton Road and San Timoteo Canyon Road.
The Verdugo family established their farms near what is now Alessandro Road and the railroad. Other Mexican families established small family farms and cattle ranches. When the Southern California railroad began construction in 1873, many Mexicans found employment.

Little remains of evidence of Mexican settlers in San Timoteo Canyon, except for a small cemetery on what is now private property in the lower portion of the canyon.
